Questions? > after surgery in the hospital > Why is my hand numb?
The reasons in order of likeliness:
1. When you take pain pills you sleep soundly, don't move position, and may compress the ulnar nerve at the elbow. The ring and little finger are most vulnerable. This can also happen during anesthesia, but we take every precaution to prevent this with padding.
2. In order to reach your heart during surgey, your chest must be spread. This may stretch the lower nerves that supply the hand (usually ring and little fingers). This is especially the case if you are big.
3. You've had a stroke. This is uncommon, and extemely unlikely to affect just fingers or hands. If you have other major numbness or weakness including other body parts, that is concerning. Tell us right away.
Numbers 1 and 2 go away with time and might be helped with therapy. Number 3 is a seriuos issue and require a 911 call if you are at home.
