There are basically two different types of heart valves: mechanical (metal) and biologic (animal). The biologic valves last a long time, but can wear out. The mechanical valves usually last forever, but require medication (Coumadin). I discuss this carefully with every valve patient before surgery, but in general, if you are older - biologic. If you are younger and can take Coumadin every day - mechanical.
