The short answer is: almost never

The long answer is: We use minimally invasive techniques to minimize leg problems when removing your vein. The blood that used to flow through that vein will find other channels. Most patients won't notice any difference, and many won't even notice the one inch leg incision. Remember that your arteries carry the blood to your feet, not your veins.

That said, some of our patients have chronic leg venous or arterial insufficiency. We try to harvest the best vein from the "best" leg. (Remember, we need the best "pipes" we can get for your heart. We ultrasound your veins in the operating room.). Some patients with previous vein problems will have increased swelling short or long term. Compromise of the arterial circulation is almost unheard of, but your arterial insufficiency could affect your incision healing.
